Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in several interviews following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" observation after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of play – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There is no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
