The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Each time a significant honors show nears, one notices an outcry for introducing of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of fans with niche passions.

Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories successfully include many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
  • Just some logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
