No fewer than thirteen passengers lose their lives and 98 injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” declared the country's president.

The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the year before. This project was a hallmark of his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in public works. They were executed at an rapid speed, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party urged an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed pending a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been running in total adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and management of these vital projects.
